Reducing emissions in buildings has always been a hot topic but seldom do we come across actionable solutions. While it can seem like a monster to tackle, there are simple steps that can be implemented.

The real estate industry contributes significantly to Global Warming – according to the United States Environment Protection Agency, 62% of electricity production is used in commercial  applications.


While this might seem as unavoidable and out of our control, we as a community can definitely take initiatives/spread knowledge in order to reduce emissions.

Taking care of your building can be expensive – both carbon & money.

Transportation emissions and expenses are not the first thing that come to mind when talking about energy efficiency in buildings. But it is in fact a big contributor to infrastructure management carbon footprint in the form of comfort calls. 

A comfort call is when an off-site technician is called to a location when it gets too hot/too cold to adjust the temperature settings. Comfort calls in infrastructure management are a very common and recurring event that contribute to emissions and expenses. With Energy Metrics, we can eliminate comfort calls altogether.

At least bring it to just the bare-bones essential trips to replace equipment only when needed.

Reducing Operational costs which resulted in reducing CO2 emissions

Of the $2 Million savings on visits, even if we allocate 50% to the actual mileage reimbursements, it is about $1 Million. With a reimbursement of around $ 0.52 to $0.58 per km, this equates to around 1.851 Million Kms saved. With emissions of around 112 g/km for lightweight commercial vehicles. This means we have saved a whopping 207,407,407 g of CO2 – in other words 207 Tonnes of CO2 avoided getting into the atmosphere!


The savings in 2020 was largely to alter and scale down the operating hours and make changes to fit the broader pandemic demands/government directives. Having Energy Metrics deployed made them take full advantage, avoiding every trip that was needed, in the process minimizing contact and reducing infections all the way.
