16 Jun Reducing Emissions and Going GreenReading Time: 4 minutes
Reducing emissions in buildings has always been a hot topic but seldom do we come across actionable solutions. While it can seem like a monster to tackle, there are simple steps that can be implemented.
The real estate industry contributes significantly to Global Warming – according to the United States Environment Protection Agency, 62% of electricity production is used in commercial applications.
While this might seem as unavoidable and out of our control, we as a community can definitely take initiatives/spread knowledge in order to reduce emissions.
We all can do our part – Below are some steps that can be taken to help achieve a lower carbon footprint:
- Reducing electricity use by increasing efficiency in homes, businesses and industries
- Using less carbon-intensive fuel
- Using renewable energy sources
Energy Metrics constantly advises our clients on all the three, but our strength is and has always been #1 - Reducing electricity use by increasing efficiency in homes, businesses and industries.
By increasing efficiency, we not only reduce our carbon footprint and help in saving our planet but also save money and effort – a happy side effect of going green in the long run!
Let us break it down for you!
By using Energy Metrics, you can monitor just about anything and everything of importance within your infrastructure.
Our platform provides an integrated smart layer on top of any BMS system to make it an intelligent energy consumption overseer and the data from your devices starts flowing in within minutes.
It is highly important to monitor all devices that consume energy in your infrastructure so that you can identify how much energy the building consumes and recognize units that consume more electricity than they should. Once the data starts flowing in, you can sit back and relax. While our EM.Core engine pulls metrics from all of your devices, it not only displays the data on the EM.Connect platform, it starts providing you recommendations on what is lagging and needs fixing based on the optimal setpoints you provided.
The below graph shows how our platform helped one of our leading clients reduce their EUI by 4.3 points in a span of 3 years. A 15% reduction on their energy consumption with a solid 19% reduction in Electricity alone.
I am sure you are wondering how! Check out the complete story here!
Taking care of your building can be expensive – both carbon & money.
Transportation emissions and expenses are not the first thing that come to mind when talking about energy efficiency in buildings. But it is in fact a big contributor to infrastructure management carbon footprint in the form of comfort calls.
A comfort call is when an off-site technician is called to a location when it gets too hot/too cold to adjust the temperature settings. Comfort calls in infrastructure management are a very common and recurring event that contribute to emissions and expenses. With Energy Metrics, we can eliminate comfort calls altogether.
At least bring it to just the bare-bones essential trips to replace equipment only when needed.
Our platform provides the Facility Manager and Technicians with a holistic portfolio view of all their locations, online and on our app. When someone gets a call about any site being too hot or cold, all the technician needs to do is adjust the optimal settings right from where they are without the need to travel all the way to the site!
While one might wonder how much difference mitigating comfort calls can actually make, we’re here to tell you that we have done this successfully and saved over $2 million USD for one of our Fortune 100 Banking clients in 2020-2021 alone!
Of the $2 Million savings on visits, even if we allocate 50% to the actual mileage reimbursements, it is about $1 Million. With a reimbursement of around $ 0.52 to $0.58 per km, this equates to around 1.851 Million Kms saved. With emissions of around 112 g/km for lightweight commercial vehicles. This means we have saved a whopping 207,407,407 g of CO2 – in other words 207 Tonnes of CO2 avoided getting into the atmosphere!
The savings in 2020 was largely to alter and scale down the operating hours and make changes to fit the broader pandemic demands/government directives. Having Energy Metrics deployed made them take full advantage, avoiding every trip that was needed, in the process minimizing contact and reducing infections all the way.
By using Energy Metrics’ Software-as-a-Service to monitor your fleet of devices, we have helped save energy consumption but also reduce operational emissions associated with maintenance visits and scheduled repair by changing to a need-based visit methodology.
Lot of dollars in through savings. Become a model in reducing CO2 emissions. And overall become more ‘Green’, attracting more rebates and subsidies from the government. A fortune 100 bank, yet they went to their bank laughing!
It is such a gratification for us to know that we have contributed to reducing around 10 GWH of energy usage, and avoided 200 tonnes of CO2 from pollution, making the world so much better for us and our future.
Reducing emissions in buildings is key to a ‘Greener’ world. We are keen to help more companies like you to get such major savings!
